Melting Shapes is about investigating the translation of organic shape from one material to another. The used materials are given deadstock white shirts. When unpacking the shirts, I was surprised of the amount of plastic used and produced with the sole short term purpose of stiffening the shirt collars before these are taken into use. By melting the hard plastic, it shape-shifted in uncontrollable ways into twisted, 3-dimensional forms. With Melting Shapes I wanted to work with how a single piece of trash can contain potential, value and inspiration - to find out that nothing is worth nothing. ”Melting” is a transitional state, changing from solid to fluid/ liquid. The plastic behaves uncontrollable and freely when melting. It twists, curls, shrink and then it stiffens in a new form: far away from its former state, hard to recognise as what it used to be, almost reminiscent of smoke, soap bubbles or flames. This, I have translates into the garments. At the same time the project aims to melt the borders between fashion and art, packaging and product, waste and ressource.
